Random Acts of Kindness
The 17th February was Random Acts of Kindness Day, and even though we shouldn’t really need an excuse, this day gives us a reason to just be nice to a random person for no reason.
I’m as guilty as the next person of sometimes being too involved in my own dramas to worry about other people. I do try not to be though, and if I can help someone I always will. Is that a trumpet I hear blowing?
Before I start polishing up my crown too much though, let me tell you about the time one of my acts of kindness caused a major security alert on Chiltern Railways after a West End shopping trip…
It had been a long and tiring day finding a gift for my husband’s birthday and I was exhausted. As my train finally pulled in to Aylesbury Vale Parkway I noticed an elderly woman on crutches trying to get off the train. I asked her if she needed help, and she gratefully took hold of my arm while I held her spare crutch and her bag for her as we slowly manoeuvred onto the platform.
“Will you be ok?” I asked her
She nodded, but then asked if I could possibly help her down to the taxi rank too.
After a slow descent down the ramp I made sure she was safely ensconced in her cab, and with a warm glow after my good deed, I trotted off to my car. It was only as I opened the boot to put my shopping inside, that I realised it was still on the train. The train that was just leaving the station to head back into London.
We all know what happens to unattended baggage on trains, hence the security alert, and needless to say my husband never did get the jacket he wanted for his birthday!
My point is this though..
If we’re honest with ourselves, no matter what our circumstances, we’re all just doing what we can to get by. With that in mind, why wait until the next 17th February? How nice would it be to receive a kind word or gesture from someone else just out of the blue, to brighten our day.
Let’s then pay that forward..
Send a card to a friend just saying ‘you’re great’. Take the rubbish bins out for a neighbour. Donate old blankets to a shelter. Run an errand for someone. Hold a door open. Smile. It’ll make you feel better, I promise.
